Job Description:
This position is responsible for performing all aspects of street maintenance work, including installation, repair, and maintenance of City roadways, sidewalks, storm drains, and signage. This position may be required to work a full weekend (Saturday and Sunday) schedule.
Job Responsibilities:
- Performs pavement patching and assists in road construction projects performing such work as checking the grade, spreading, compacting and smoothing base material, spreading oil and asphalt, and rolling and tamping finished surface
- Performs maintenance and repair on concrete structures, such as curbs, gutters, small drainage structures, and sidewalks; sets forms, mixes, pours, and finishes cement
- Performs maintenance, repairs, and installation of City signs, barricades, and guardrails
- Performs emergency work, including clearing debris from roads and drainage structures, placing sandbags in nearly flooded areas, and providing traffic control services
- Prepares roadway condition reports and assessments; compiles data on completed jobs and assignments
- Performs weed abatement and clearing debris from right-of-way
- May supervise a small crew in routine work, such as clearing debris from streets, rights of way, and drainage structures
- Operates equipment, such as skip loaders, skid-steers, mini-excavator, emulsion sprayers, asphalt spreading machines, graders, rollers, backhoes, trailer mounted vacuum system, and power brooms
Job Requirements:
- Knowledge and application of safety practices relating to working in the public right-of-way
- Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
- Ability to understand and read rough diagrams or construction drawings
- Basic computer skills and the ability to enter service requests using a mobile device
- Strong time-management and the ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact with customers
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work effectively within a team
- Knowledge of and ability to perform street maintenance and repairs in the following areas: asphalt, sidewalks, street signs, and street markings
Qualification & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Two years of experience in cement, asphalt, street painting or related experience
- Experience operating heavy equipment is desirable
- Possession of a valid Class C California driver license and safe driving record
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class A California driver license within one year of appointment
